Becoming Your Own Raving Fan

I work with a lot of different small business owners.

One of the questions I like to flesh out early on is: “If I’m walking down the street, and we meet, how likely is it that I’m going to learn about what your business is all about.”

Of course, I already know the answer, because it became clear when we first met…

But anyway, I ask it, for some reflection.

Usually, it comes back at around a 3 or 4 out of 10.

As in, it’s far more likely that I won’t find out about their business, than it is that I will.

This can be a problem.

Interestingly, when we create something, we often run into a hurdle that’s called commitment.

When we create, with low commitment, we get to hide. The work stays under shelter. It feels safer, in a weird way.

When we commit, then we push it out there into the weather, for all to see.

In this case, we are talking about business, of course.

But what about on a bigger picture.

What about when we look at you as a person?

Concepts like self-love, self-compassion are thrown around all the time, and are inextricably linked to resilience, confidence, belief… the list goes on.

In short, the trade is ridiculous. For zero downside, and infinite upside, you can decide to choose a posture about yourself that can catalyse forward motion each and every day.

Yes, it can be rocky, yes, there are ups and downs, and no, this doesn’t mean we’d need to be the obnoxious person at the party…

But the question remains, what would it look like if you decided to become your own raving fan?
