The first time we start to learn basic movements on the gymnastic rings, we bring in this subconscious imprint of a gymnast. Even the name “gymnastic rings” reminds us of someone elite, perhaps from Russia, holding an Iron Cross way above the ground.
So, we come into the situation with an idea.
We start to think about this, and overlay it with the actual outcome that we start to see emerge when we grab a hold of these seemingly slippery round suspended objects.
We have a visual in our head, but reality isn’t matching up. Wow, these things are wobbly… The mental chatter begins.
There’s a big place for visualisation in movement, but in equal parts there’s value in not over thinking it. When we simply “do,” we bring back the beginners mindset, and allow the intelligence of the physical body to emerge.
It’s funny a lot of the times in other areas – relationships, business… We can read a manual, do a lot of strategy, ideate… But we really need to simply “do” as well.
It makes sense that strategy should lead action, but a lot of the times the best strategy is under-thinking it, coming back to our centre and simply taking action.
The rest often sorts itself out.
