When I was 12, we were getting ready to sail the boat from Auckland to Fiji.
The trick is to wait for a “weather window” – a time when you can hopefully shoot the gap between weather systems and have somewhat favourable conditions.
In this first trip, we picked a time, left, and then got hammered halfway there.
This happened a few times – heavy winds, seas…
It turns out, this isn’t so easy to do.
And when we look deeper, we see that in actual fact the conditions were never just “perfect” to leave. There was always some risk of bad weather.
It turns out that when we factor in the chaotic nature of not just weather, but financial markets, property, small business, our bodies… the conditions are never just right to do a lot of things.
“People who delay action until all factors are favourable do nothing.” – William Feather.
If we ever want to leave the harbour, sometimes, we just have to go.
