When you give someone a book to read, it’s an act of generosity.
When you write a book, it’s an act of courage.
When we “share” a book, post, or quote, we’re signalling. A signal of affiliation, of status, of opinion: “Check this out, I saw it, I agree with it, I resonate with it – you should see it.”
And, we pass it along the line.
When we “write” a book, a post or an assertion, we are taking a stand. We are digging a position, and we are exposing ourselves. “Here I am, this is something I believe.”
We are the source, we are opening ourselves up to criticism.
Yes sharing can be both generous and helpful.
Yes, most “new” ideas are either borrowed or stolen anyway.
But the raw energy, time and courage that it takes to create rather than consume and share makes it a worthwhile endeavour for growth.
Share it, but write it too.
