Well, there may have been a time there at uni when I lived on campus across from the quad…
But here I’m talking about another kind of streaking.
When we try to create change, we’re usually looking at a series of actions that we have to take, and often these need to be repeated over time.
These actions or behaviours are often new, and therefore often hard to turn into habits.
A “streak” is a series of these actions that you string together. Maybe it’s a month, two months, or three months. Often, small actions, and often every day. Unbroken.
The idea with putting together “streaks,” is that you see that you’re the kind of person who can be both consistent and persistent. When you believe that you’re the the kind of person that can be consistent and persistent, you build confidence in your ability to transform.
Realising goals and making transformations isn’t always easy. But becoming the person who is persistent and consistent, and who can string together streaks of new, small actions can certainly help.
There are only a couple of steps to build streaks:
- Pick small tasks, but ones that are in line with the larger transformations you’d like to make. Maybe you want to become more confident in general – so the streak could be saying “hello” to a new person at work each day.
- Commit to 30, 60 or 90 days.
- Find a tally board to cross off the days as you build the streak.
It’s important to start small with the action, as the focus here is literally just to build a streak and make “crosses” on the board as you do so.
If there’s too much tension with the action and you fail to build a streak, it won’t work.
