Voluntary Innovation.

On day in my teens I was doing some work with my Dad.

In the morning, he was pouring his cup of coffee, and knocked the canister over. I don’t remember if it was the cup, or the filter/holder that tipped over…

In any event, he ended up with proper burns all over his arm, pretty quickly. We figured the best thing to do was to cool the burn off, then wrap it up.

At least then we didn’t have to look at it.

The next step was to figure out how to do the job we originally had. He was one hand/arm down, so we needed to innovate.

We find that “innovation” can come in two forms. We can innovate by choice, which means we shake things up even when they are going OK…

Or, we can innovate because we have to… Like with the burn.

While this later case needs to happen on occasion. (recent “pivot” anyone?) it’s far more productive if we can take the lead.

Committing to innovation even though things are already working is not only brave, but far more effective.
