Fear and following

I remember in my first year of engineering they absolutely blasted us with a physics mid-year exam.

I think 85% of the year failed that test.

My thoughts at the time were that this was a wake up call to say “hey, this is different from high school, you need to pay more attention.”

The next week, all of the seats were taken in the physics lecture.

No-one questioned the content or the words of the lecturer.

It’s not that paying attention to your physics class is a bad thing, but it’s clear that when we are afraid, we tend to blindly follow.

If we know that contrasting ideas, curiosity and challenging “the way things are” is a healthy approach to making a situation better (as opposed to the blind following), then how can we help to remove fearful narratives in our groups or organisations?
