For years, I resisted the “cold shower” trend.
I couldn’t get into it. I grew up surfing in cold water, and just didn’t see the upside to adding more of it in, unless I was in the ocean. I tried it a little down in Melbourne, but just found it added more stress to an already pretty strung out existence.
Half way through this year, I gave it another crack.
No real reason, and nothing really to report, besides it feels like a cold shower, at the start of the day.
The thing that I noticed though – like writing – it’s way easier to do this stuff every day. I certainly wouldn’t say the cold shower is “habit” – it’s definitely a conscious act – but the fact that “I do this every morning” makes it a lot easier.
Whether it’s a cold shower, painting, a daily walk, eating well, or writing, it’s usually easier to just bring it into your day, no stress, no anxiety, no hype.
Every day is often easier than “sometimes,” and almost always easier than “weekly.”
Once we have a rhythm, if it continues to serve us, we keep it in. If not, we can cut it out.
