Bill’s leadership approach: Connection and then “extension”

I’m on a reading rampage this year.

I’ve been making extra time early for it, and I’m getting through a lot of books.

One I’m half way through right now is “The Score Takes Care of Itself,” by the late Bill Walsh. “Bill” was known as one of the greatest NFL coaches, and helped take the SF 49’ers from the bottom of the swamp to multiple Super Bowl champs.

A big part of Bill’s approach was teaching the entire staff and team to see themselves as a connected organisation.

Connection might happen when we support each other in our challenges. It brings us closer together.

The next step was to see themselves as an extension of the organisation.

This means that when someone scores a touch-down, the entire organisation scores the touch down.

When someone drops the ball, so does the entire organisation.

The movement from connection – which is relatively common – to extension seems to have been the most powerful for the team.

Individuals weren’t able to showboat, or complain, and how they showed up in all aspects of their lives became paramount for the team as a whole.

What happens if you brought these two concepts into your day today?

If you already feel connected with your team, what happens if you bring “extension” in at a deeper level?

How can you celebrate a win together?
