Skills, Movements, Habits – Maintenance Mode

In the movement world, there are a huge number of different types of skillsets one could choose to pursue.

Strength based movements, balance work, acrobatics, juggling.

There is a concept called “maintenance mode.”

In order to “achieve” the skill, often we need to “sprint” a little bit, which means we need to over-emphasise this skill so that we can complete it successfully a few times. This helps the brain create the pathways as needed.

Once it is comfortable, we can simply maintain it.

This requires far less exposure or practice.

Just enough to keep the skill there and ready.

We see a similar pattern with learning a language, or any other skill.

The upfront effort is important. It’s hard, daunting and frustrating.

But once we familiarise ourselves with it, the maintenance of the skill or habit becomes quite a bit easier.
