In a group environment, when we facilitate deeper connection, we create a space for greater contribution.
This contribution could be in the form of idea generation, feedback or even physical labour.
Within the group, there are two ways to optimise this:
-
Vertical connection – this is from the facilitator or “leader” to the members of the group. This begins with basic physiology – eye contact, names, even lighting.. Creating a natural atmosphere that is conducive to connection. “I see you.”
-
Horizontal connection, or “tightening” of the group – this is from group member to group member. This could be one to one, or small groups.
When a baby perceives a safe environment, they coo, or smile.
When we sense a safe environment and use it to build both depth and breadth in our connections, we can break down a couple of the barriers than can stand in the way of collaboration and contribution.
(We are looking at connection itself here, both online and offline platforms offer the same dynamics.)
