In school, we are given assignments based on word count.
A 3000 word essay, a 10,000 word report.
In the fitness industry, it’s often an amount of weight: lose 5kg, lift another 20kg…
These are both problematic in the same way.
The word count has us focusing on the number of words. A variable which is completely independent of the quality of the writing.
Same with the weight. The way we go about the movement, or the quality of the movement is often completely independent of the number.
Sure, sometimes the report needs to be a certain length, or it would be nice to eventually lift that certain amount of weight.
But while we might need to meet these parameters for the grading system or a competition, it is far from where our main effort lies.
