Using Fringes (movement, business, innovation)

“Almost all innovation in a system happens at fringes. So maximize fringes.”

In Out of Control: The Rise of Neo-Biological Civilisation, Kevin Kelley makes an observation about biological processes:

“The nature of an innovation is that it will arise at a fringe where it can afford to become prevalent enough to establish its usefulness without being overwhelmed by the inertia of the orthodox system.”

I’ve often written about the value of silence, creating space or the distancing effect. These are simple ways we can create personal geographical fringes or even fringes in cognitive load or emotion.

Whether it’s movement, relationships or your business, using fringes to break the ordinary flow of events is a great way to ignite innovation, spark creativity and create change.
