When we vote, the intent is that we each engage as an individual, then we have a sum total of opinions that we can compare and analyse.
This is a fantastic way to ensure that each participant is heard and also provides a diversity of opinion.
When we work on a solution for the best chocolate cake recipe or how to tackle climate change, we benefit more from thoughtful debate and idea generation.
“Good collective decisions require two components: Deliberation and Diversity of opinions”
The work around here is the collective – small groups.
When we break away and form small groups, we are able to draw on individual opinions and experiences but also benefit from the robust average, which eliminates outliers.
From here, we can come together once again and compare or collate a group of solutions.
Connection not only enhances quality of life, but also quality of ideas.
How could this type of debate or idea generation enhance your relationships or work?
A great video on group decision making here.
