Connection Constraints

The concept of “connection” can be a little broad.

We can of course connect deeply with not just a lot of different people, but even feel connected to other animals and nature.

So there is some flexibility here. And perhaps different flavours if you like.

However, we find some key ingredients keep coming back.

  1. Time

  2. Attention

Time does a couple of things – firstly, it can allow for a shift in our neuroception – our perception and assessment of the environment and of each other. With time, we find space. What is really happening here? We can allow the breath, we can allow the guard to come down.

Attention, the inverse of distraction. Attention is trainable. Not the focused attention of staring at the candle flame, simply a commitment to being here with the person.

Fortunately, we have a lot of tools to help with productivity, scheduling, travel and more – all of which can help us set up the conditions we are after.

Unfortunately, if we aren’t careful we also have an ever increasing source of distraction clawing for our attention.
