The Laptop Lifestyle

Is a hoax.

It does not work.

Well, for me anyway (and, I haven’t seen it done powerfully yet)

And, I did try – yesterday I took my laptop – I can work “remotely” you see – so I took my laptop out, the sun was shining, I set up on a bench by the beach because the “go to” cafe where all the cool people go was closed for the day.

Perfect – there was no wind, a great view. Time to do some work.

So I set up my hot spot, then I sat there.. 2 minutes. 5 minutes… I looked at the waves again. I sent some messages to people.

I have to say, I did feel pretty cool.

Yet, not one bit of work got done.

Nothing.

Not cool. I’ve felt this before, this feeling is the resistance.

So, after 10 minutes, I closed up shop and went to sit in the back corner of a room and got to work for a 2 hour block.

You see, I love the beach, I had surfed earlier that morning at dawn. I love the outdoors, all of it.

But the thing about working in cafes, at the beach, at the park etc, is that usually very little work actually gets done.

When you factor in the travel time, the food ordering, the consideration of whether or not to share the whole situation on social media, you very quickly have destroyed any chance of real work.

Just like it destroys a workout to bring a phone or work into it (if you’re checking your emails during your morning session, you are missing out), I believe this idea of doing a half-job on a beautiful beach destroys productivity.

Go to the beach, go to the cafe, but go to have fun or socialise, knowing that your best and deepest work will most often be done in the office, at home, in your cave – wherever you like to go, with minimal distraction and maximum intention.
