A couple of weeks ago we visited a “Pinot and Picasso” session.
This is where you have some wine with your friends, and try to paint a picture on a canvas with acrylics at the same time.
The room was set up with three tables, and there were around a dozen of us, split up around the room along the tables.
We were to paint a Kingfisher, which was sitting on a branch.
It was a fun (and surprisingly quiet!) couple of hours, and when we finished, we all walked around the room and checked out each others work.
One thing I noticed was that a lot of us had clumped together.
Without speaking, a lot of us had “mirrored” the person next to us or two along.
There was the group that decided to paint their sky purple instead of blue, there was the group of realists, there was the group who had a super detailed “tree…”
This local influencing is something that happens all the time – in movement, in our work, in our habits. And when we’re painting with some wine it’s kind of fun to watch.
When you are cultivating habits or creating work though, we need to be mindful. Who are you sitting next to? Who are you watching? Who is likely influencing your work? Who are you potentially mirroring?
Is this helping you further your work?
