On January 3rd, Celeste Barber, an Australian comedian, put out a call for action.
She started a fundraising drive for the Australian Rural Fire Service, with a target of raising $30,000 for the firies to help with supplies and support during this current Australian bush fire disaster period.
Celeste used Facebook and Instagram (mostly the 15 second “stories”), to share her story, thoughts and feelings. She brought us into her family. She created urgency and necessity, and quickly enrolled us into joining her in the effort.
It quickly spread globally.
In 5 days, she’s now hit over $45 million. That’s around $9 million per day.
One critical ingredient that Celeste had to create such a powerful movement, was an “audience.” A group of people that trust her, and give her their attention.
Usually, although it may appear sudden, creating big change doesn’t happen overnight. Rather, it’s a possibility that happens after years of showing up to slowly build the attention, and slowly build the trust.
A community, audience or group that trusts us is a powerful asset to make an impact.
Showing up regularly to create this asset is a trade that’s likely worth taking.
