In 1997 I had just started at a new school and a few months in, we left on a boat for Fiji.
My Dad had designed and built this boat in the previous 4 years or so, and this was the first trip of many around the South Pacific.
When we’d go away, we would do a blend of homeschool and correspondence school curriculum.
The thing is, at this age, the last a kid wants to do is leave their friends behind at school.
Anyway, we found time and time again, that upon return, not only would we be a year or so “ahead” in the school curriculum, but we would have banked this huge journey (and a tan!) as well.
And we would work less. Each day we would study from 8am until noon. Then have the afternoon off.
Even with this reduced load, it was incredibly easy to out-run the school system.
Moving fast isn’t always about trying to fit more in. A lot of times it’s about finding another way – a more efficient way – a way that works for the individual or team at hand.
(PS, you can check out a 60 second clip of this first boat trip if you like – I’ve just stumbled upon a ton of old footage which has been pretty fun. Here it is on Vimeo)
