When we enter a marathon, there’s an expectation that we’ll need to be able to run 42.2km on the day that the starter gun fires.
For most of us, while not easy, this makes marathon training pretty simple:
Get an understanding of where you’re at as a runner, make sure you have enough time, and then more or less work backward to figure out what needs to happen.
Of course, because it’s simple, there are also a ton of off-the-shelf programs you can get to suit your level.
In your work or project, what is the expectation? What kind of quality? What kind of timeliness?
In your relationships, what can you expect? What kind of support? What kind of attitude?
If we aren’t clear (and in communication) about your expecatations, can we be surprised when an outcome falls short?
Being clear around expectations or standards can sometimes come across as being “up-tight” or “strict.”
Often though, it can be a gift to both sides as it paves the way for accountability and consistency.
