Post-it rules.

Over the years I’ve cultivated a little love for post-it notes.

At any time, I have at least four different colours available near my desk.

These things are great: idea generation, reminders, book marks…

But you can go astray. Here are three (personal) rules for getting the most out of the powerful little squares:

  1. Use big pens, go fast. I prefer the Artline Supremes. This makes it so you can only fit a few words on them, which is the point of post-its.
  2. Use a bunch of different colours. Favourite colour is blue? Use some yellow, pink and green ones in there too. This will help trigger different thinking.
  3. Have far more than you need. If you are doing some idea generation work, you might need 30 of them… Have 200 available. This surplus keeps you moving fast.

Post it’s are big enough for a love note, a positioning statement for your business, or a spur of the moment name for your new podcast.

So while they have limitations, they bring a ton of possibility.
