When I was young we lived on a boat for extended periods.
In our first trip from NZ to Fiji, we learned the art of “anchoring” a big boat, with a family, by hand (we didn’t have an electric windless at the time), in lots of wind.
Once the wind is up, if the boat is light, it “sails” all over the place when you’re trying to anchor. It also gets hard for the person up the front to hear whoever is driving the boat.
Of course this struggle can cause all sorts of drama.
So typically my mum and sister would be right up forward, and I would be half-way as a communications relay. Yelling one way or the other.
Long story short, pretty soon we all hated anchoring.
It was stressful, people would end up yelling at each other, and once the anchoring was done we would have the arduous job of folding the heavy sails up (more frustration.)
Anyway, soon of course we would project our distaste of this whole anchoring process onto the anchoring itself. We would go into it like we were ready to go to a family feud.
I remember one time there was so much wind and shouting that Dad ended up running up the front to help with anchoring, and promptly blew his back out amongst all the shouting and lifting.
When we project hesitation, or negative energy onto any task or practice, even if we soldier on, it’s eventually going to cause a problem
It could be our marketing or sales in a business, or a staff meeting. When we “don’t like it” or avoid it, we send some negative energy that ends up creating a negative structure, that eventually collapses or fails to deliver.
When we feel “against” an aspect of our work or relationships, it’s usually far more helpful to create a container, or practice to relax into this and understand the energy, before we return to whatever we were so worked up about.
If we project it forward, we transmit the energy into the task. Whatever we create will have issues.
Pushing through when you are against it is sometimes needed, but it’s an exception, not the rule. A positive or neutral energy can create a structure or result that helps us get where we want to be.
