The “instructional” part of goals

IKEA furniture is known for it’s banal instructions.

Thin paper, predictable images, known outcome… Nothing to get worked up about.

But, it does get the job done.

In goal setting, we often focus on the aspirational part of a goal – big hairy audacious goals, “moonshot” goals, etc

And fair enough. If we’re going to work on something for a while, it’s important that it fires us up a little.

But if we only focus on the moonshot element, and let go of what makes IKEA actually work so well, a lot of times our goals aren’t realised. Or, we’re stressed as anything along the way.

The instructional side of goal setting can seem boring. Who wants a thin-papered outline of what to do next?

But what if breaking things down, to a little bit of “boring,” step-by-step, is just what we need?

What if setting up a little more “instructional” creates the perfect balance to bring the big, scary vision to life?
